The instrument was purchased by Neil Young in circa 1965 and was used extensively for both studio and public performances up until around 1969 / 70 when he traded with fellow Buffalo Springfield collaborator Jim Messina for his now iconic Old Black 1960s Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Interview - In a recent interview with the US Guitar Player magazine, Neil discusses trading the 6120 in trades for 'Old Black' quote as follows.
"Most guitar parts were recorded on the "Old Black," though in the earlier years with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY, I played mainly on Gretsch White Falcon and orange Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins. I acquired “Old Black” in 1969 through a trade with one-time Buffalo Springfield collaborator Jim Messina, who received the Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins guitar in exchange"
